I found myself with a few minutes, my Jan/Feb 2026 issue of Writer's Digest, rainy skies, and a dog that wouldn't leave my lap. Okay small dog, we'll read.

In the pages under the heading "Advice for Your writing Success" is an article singing the praises of the above mentioned challenge. One thrown down by Ray Bradbury some 25 years ago. Far be it from me to dispute and undisputed authorial genius the likes of Mr. Bradbury.

To put it succinctly, the challenge is this, for each week for a full year, read 1 poem, 1 short story, and 1 essay each night. And, (yes, that's and as in in addition to) write 1 short story a week.

Challenge Accepted Ray.

I begin tonight.

And if anything interesting happens, I'll let you know.

And I'll post the short stories.

Finally, a reason to open the book of poetry written by my favorite professor at Central Washington University, Maya Jewell Zeller. Rust Fish, here I come.
